It’s a great question. Some ideas:

  • I suspect that large vehicles (trucks, busses, fire trucks, ambulances) will be some of the first highly automated categories. They have a lot to gain by automation
  • I think there will definitely be some changes in how services are deployed with other changes/innovations — an automated vehicle with “top priority” may be the fastest way for first responders to get to sites… the truck as the unit of storage may well be replaced by an owned, specialized trailer for on-site supplies and equipment for hvac, plumbing, etc
  • Disaster (fire/floods/violence) response may not involve a hub and spoke approach as today. Equipment and people may not need to come in the same vehicle. Drones and other aircraft, specialty vehicles/trailers/pods may deliver equipment independent of people who may, like packets on a network, have top priority for getting from where they are to where they’re needed…
